Gramercy Park Roof Terrace,
New York, NY

The challenge was to create a sense of privacy with an open feel.

The garden below and the skyline above were both incorporated into the design of a new rooftop terrace for a NYC fashion photographer.

We designed a shade structure -- a steel frame arcade with removable fabric panels -- that imitates the exposed structural system of the penthouse apartment and was inspired by metal furniture designed by Jean Prouvé in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

The arcade functions as a transitional element between the interior and exterior spaces, linking the realms of the public and the private. It also visually extends the client's living area and frames the urban landscape. Perimeter plantings provide a sense of enclosure and serve as an extension of the park below.
